Midsomer Norton Sixth Form is pleased to announce that a group of its students are aiming to travel beyond British borders to study in the USA. Six students are applying to US universities this year with specialist support provided by the Sixth Form staff. Amongst them is Amy Boalch who is applying to Harvard to study Medicine and Tom Wherry who is applying to the University of Florida. "It seems a daunting process at first but I've been lucky that my teachers have been really supportive and have given me excellent guidance to get me through the process" says Lorna Wroe who is planning to apply to Columbia.
Midsomer Norton Sixth Form is pleased to have been chosen as one of only ten link Sixth Forms in the UK to work with Harvard UK. This means that the Sixth Form has not only been chosen as a location where specialist advice is available on applying to university in the US, but also as the link school for Harvard UK in the South West.
There are over 3,000 colleges and universities in the US offering a wide range of subjects and degrees. The US university system is different in many respects from the British system, but university education is all about living in a student community and enjoying the experience of learning, especially from each other. The US system in general (and Harvard in particular) look for a far wider range of interests and pursuits in an applicant than the British system - not just academic grades. Many US universities and colleges have finance policies to identify the most talented students and then offer funding packages according to need, rather than merit. For instance, the grants available at Harvard (known as Financial Aid) are possibly the most generous in the US.
Midsomer Norton Sixth Form is holding an information evening on applying to universities in the USA for any student living in the South West region on Monday 28th November at 6.30pm at its Norton Hill School site.
We strongly recommend that all Year 11 and 12 students considering applying attend this event. We would also be delighted to welcome anyone else who wishes to find out more about this exciting opportunity. Please register your interest via the website www.msnsixth.com as this will allow us a chance to monitor the numbers anticipated.
