Yesterday, the British-designed Olympic torch was unveiled  but it looks as it will by-pass Midsomer Norton.

However,  if you want to cheer the torchbearers on, you'll be able to in Street, Glastonbury, Wells, Croscombe, Shepton Mallet, Frome, Trowbridge, Bradford on Avon, Bath, Bitton, Longwell Green, Hanham and Bristol where there will be an evening celebration around 7pm in the Millennium Square and The Amphitheatre. The torch will be carried through these towns on Tuesday, May 22 and is due to be in Street at 9am. For times and route details click here.

Eight-thousand  London 2012 Olympic Torches will  be carried by inspirational torchbearers over the summer.  Approximately 110 Torches a day will be carried through over 1,000 communities across the UK during the 70-day Olympic Torch Relay presented by Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung. The Torch's triangular, gold-coloured form is perforated by 8,000 circles representing the 8,000 Torchbearers and their stories of personal achievement and/or contribution to their local community which will be celebrated as part of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay.

I'm looking forward to the games, but I agree with Greengala, it would be good if the 'ordinary people' would benefit in some way.

I think it might be like the royal wedding last year - everybody was bored of that before it happened, then all of a sudden on the day itself, everyone was interested.

I do think though it would have been nice if we could have had an austerity games like they did in London after the war. Billions of pounds have been spent on this, but apart from the event itself and the torch relay, ordinary people don't seem to be benefiting from the Games in any way. We haven't got that kind of money to spend without seeing some kind of return for us.
