Valley hold on to top spot with big victory

Chew Valley 1st XV 60 Taunton 2nd XV 0
Despite missing a number of 1st XV regulars, including prolific winger Silas Cox due to a broken hand, Chew Valley brushed aside visitors Taunton 2nd XV to remain top of Tribute Somerset Premier.
Dominance at the scrum and plenty of possession caused Taunton early problems and they conceded a penalty, which scrum-half Alex Cameron kicked perfectly, along with the conversion of a try under the posts.
Winger Jack Evans ran back a loose punt upfield and the ball went through several pairs of hands before outside centre Will Bryan crossed the line but gifted Evans the touchdown.
Despite tacky underfoot conditions, Chew looked to entertain with the ball in hand and tries from Charles Shallcross and flanker Mitch Quoi soon followed.
Cameron added two conversions and a penalty before scoring a try of his own after the Taunton pack were shunted backwards, taking the score to 32-0 at half- time.
The first scrum of the second half saw the visitors in reverse gear again as the home front row of James Tanner, Tristan Davis and Jonny Eves went to work.
Tanner scored from a driving maul from a lineout shortly afterwards and number eight Alex Cox added his name to the scoresheet with a typical surge from open play, with Cameron converting both.
With number eight Malcolm Pape and second row Neil Symonds prominent, Taunton were camped in the home 22 for 15 minutes and were unlucky not to score when the referee was unsighted as a driving maul ended close to the Chew line.
The hosts' ascendancy in the scrum saw the resulting five-metre contest go their way and normal service was resumed when Evans crossed the whitewash for his second try. Flanker Ross Elliott completed the scoring, along with two more Cameron conversions.
Chew remain one point clear at the top of the table, with nearest rivals Midsomer Norton having a game in hand.
On Saturday, Chew entertain Yatton in the first round of the Somerset Cup.
The Somerset 2 North match between Chew Valley 2nd XV and Midsomer Norton 3rd XV was postponed on Saturday.
