I read in the local paper that a new cycle path is going to be created in Midsomer Norton.
The article in the Somerset Guardian says it will link the Greenway with Norton Hill School, but as a relative newcomer to the town (four years) I'm not exactly sure of the route it will take.
    Does anyone know?

If you go to www.nrgy.org.uk you can see all the detail of the proposed extension to the Norton Radstock Greenway.
NRgy is a small group of local residents who got together to put an application to the Sustrans Connect2 project, which got £50million from the Big Lottery Fund.  Connect2 was set up to identify obstructions to safe cycling and to create solutions to those obstructions.
Basically the proposed route follows the formation of the old Somerset and Dorset Railway from Somervale Road to Norton Hill School, adjacent to the restored Midsomer Norton Station.
The link from the existing Greenway (which uses part of the old Great Western Railway Bristol-Frome line) will use the Fosseway path (past the council depot there) down to Somervale Road, where a new "Toucan" crossing (basically a combined pedestrian/cyclist traffic light - Two-Can) will take you safely over the fast and busy road (you wouldn't believe that it's a 30 limit there by the speeds of the selfish and thoughtless drivers).  A new ramp, (at a bike and wheelchair friendly gradient!) will be constructed alongside the railway embankement up to track level.  It will then be an easy ride to Pit Road, with a link down the MSN high street and up to Westfield. The route will continue on to Norton Hill.

    Thanks Howard.
But i think your link was wrong - it took make to a site about saving energy (which was kinda useful, but not exactly what I was after!)
Here's the link tinyurl.com/n52wkr to anyone else interested. I think your linked missed out the 'uk' bit.
Are you also involved in the campaign to get a cycle link between Midsomer Norton and Farrington?

    Hello, Marc.
The cycle link between Midsomer Norton and Farrington Gurney rumbles on.   Unlike the newly-approved NRgy extension, which, I believe, is partly if not wholly funded by a separate organisation from B&NES Council,  our Farrington Link looks as though it will be a completely Council-provided construction, once the many land-ownership difficulties are ironed out, not to mention deciding on the best actual route it is to take, bearing in mind that some of the land under the old railway track route has been not only sold-off years ago, but irretrievably built-upon as well, making it necessary to 'go round' in some places.
Then, of course, there are the objections...
Like I said, it rumbles on - but we WON'T let it grind to a halt!

    Thanks Bigbollo
I hope that it happens. Obviously it will be useful for the good folk of Farrington to have a traffic-free safe route to Midsomer, for shops and post office etc, but I also think a lot of people from Midsomer will use it to get to Farrington. There's the farm shop and excellent cafe of course, and the golf club, and also the pub's just been done up hasn't it?
So I'm sure more people in Midsomer Norton will support your campaign too

Hello - I've heard about those plans to link up the NR Greenway with Farrington Gurney.  It's really exciting news!   I've had a couple of narrow escapes along that dangerous bit of road between Old Mills and Farrington, too - both walking and on my bike!   I've been trying to imagine where the cyclepath will cross the Northmead Road...  will they be rebuilding a bridge like they did at Welton?  Does anybody know?

Well, from what I've heard, bridges like that one are so expensive that it's more or less certain that the cycle route will be crossing the road at ground level, probably using a light-controlled crossing.   Could be another 'Toucan' crossing like they're going to put on the Norton-to-Radstock road for the Norton Hill branch.

I'd rather see another bridge like the one at Welton.
The traffic in Northmead Road is bad enough with the one-way traffic lights system. Add a pedestrian/cyclist crossing into the mix and it will be a nightmare for the car drivers!

I couldn't agree more!   But the one at Welton was SO expensive I can't see B&NES Council constructing one there in a million years, even though it would be the IDEAL solution!   Anyone in the know at the Council able to shed any light on that?

The original proposal for the Greenway extension to Norton Hill did include a bridge over Somervale Road at the same location as the former railway bridge, there, hence the original title for the scheme was "6 Arches", due to the proximity of the "Five Arches" bridge. However, Sustrans engineers rough costings showed that it would cost at least £600,000, way more than the cost of the whole new route. So the plan now includes a "Toucan Crossing". It'll only be a "nightmare" for the drivers if they want it to be. It's a 30 limit (believe it or not!) with good sightlines, so there shouldn't be any problems for drivers at all. You mention Northmead Road bridge lights. I drive along Northmead road every day and the lights there makes a good traffic calming measure. Not a problem to me. Ask any resident there what it was like before the lights went in how bad it was with speeding traffic. As always it's the careless drivers exceeding the limit and making life difficult and dangerous for themselves and others.
