Well, if we want to have a reliable and safe gas supply to our homes then we just have to put up with the current road works.
It hasn't gone un-noticed that drivers constantly complain about pot-holed roads. And then complain about road works...
Remember, the main cause of traffic congestion, and road damage, is...
...too many people...
...driving too many cars...
What do you think is the solution?
stop building houses everywhere as this is where it all started from, also the lights came down today 21st and i thought great ,
then i drove to the end of the road by charlton crossroad and seen workmen
i said to my husband there will be traffic lights there later and quess what there is
the thing is have you had to sit in your car everyday in traffic on and off for 2 years trying to take your children to school and get to work

If you are paying "road tax" then I suggest you ask for a refund because a tax of that name was abolished in 1936. Car Tax, or Graduated Vehicle Excise Duty to give it its correct title, is not ring-fenced in any way for highway maintenance. It all goes into the general tax pot along with all the other taxes. After all, we don't expect beer tax to subsidise pubs, do we? Also, taxes are compulsory unrequited payments, where "unrequited" means that the payer does not receive anything *directly* in return. Local road maintenance is the responsibility of the Local Authority, financed by Council Tax and Treasury Grants, so, in essence, we all pay for the roads whether we drive or not. Remember, a driver of a Tax Band "A" car such as a Toyota Prius pays the same "road tax" as someone walking or riding a bike... As you say, various different road works have been going on on the Wells Road for quite some time, so by now most of us have learned to factor the holdup into our travel time or take a different route? Sorry to be a bit blunt, but road works and holdups are a fact of everyday life in a car-centric society such as ours. Always have been. Always will. Get used to it. Or walk. :-). Finally, an interesting web site dedicated to exploding the myth of "road tax" can be found at http://tinyurl.com/yc64dbn
