What do you think about scrapping speed camera funding?

With the cuts to funding, many councils across the UK may be forced to switch off its speed cameras.
-
Will there be more road disasters if speed camera are switched off?
Road safety minister Mike Penning told the BBC said: "In the coalition agreement the government made clear it would end central funding for fixed speed cameras.
"Local authorities have relied too heavily on safety cameras for far too long so I am pleased that some councils are now focusing on other measures to reduce road casualties. This is another example of this government delivering on its pledge to end the war on the motorist.
Does this mean motorists will now speed though Chilcompton using it as a rat run?
What do you think of this decision? And what other road safety measures should Midsomer Norton adopt?

Actually I think the flashing speed signs are the best deterrent as when I'm told I should be doing 30mph, it makes me aware of what I'm doing. I think a flashing sign is much better than a camera...but then again it doesn't pay for itself in fines does it?

ReportWhat's all this cobblers about the "war on motorist"? The only people that "motorists" are "at war" with is themselves and each other.
Never in the field of British Politics has so much verbal incontinence been issued in such a short time than since the recent election.
Bill Bryson wrote in "Notes from a Small Island": "Motorized vehicles are ugly and dirty and bring out the worst in people". A most astute observation, especially from a Yank.
And Lynn Sloman in "Car Sick" wrote "The twenty-first century is gridlocked. Mass motorisation has ruptured community ties, bankrupted a nation of family shops, and bred a nation of obese children and adults. Politicians stumble from one transport crisis to the next."
So, to me, one of the more positive aspects of the impending collapse of the Oil Age will be the final demise of mass motoring.
And good riddance.
Oh yes... Speed cameras. Mostly Useless. People will always misbehave if they think they can get away with it - that's human nature. The only way to make people to toe the line whilst operating a tonne of very dangerous heavy machinery on the public highway in a competent manner is to have a dedicated roads policing organisation which can hand out sanctions that really hurt.
Otherwise the mass murder on our road will continue unabated.

ReportSpeed cameras are useless. All they do is make drivers slam on their brakes whenever they see a camera, and then they do 100mph in between

ReportWhy do councils have to switch off the speed cameras, motorists wouldnt realise the difference and therefore motorist would still respect the speed limits, it wouldnt cost anything to leave them in position. The A367 from The white post Inn to westfield is a race track (although a 30 mph limit) and no one takes any notice of just a 30 sign. I say put more cameras up even if they are dummies. whoever is in control of our speed limits is the dummy. Driving around country lanes at 60 mph is also a joke . I recently did a Police Motor Cycle assessment, in the rain, and the Police Instructor told me that I was driving too slow at 45 mph around bumpy and pothole Country lanes. Everybody is MAD.
