Big chance for Midsomer Norton

The other day I wandered past the Alcan factory site in Midsomer Norton.

It really does look quite eerily quiet and lonely....

But it has got me thinking that the land is in a prime spot, overlooking the Somer Valley, near a school and lots of houses.

And with that in mind I think it really is important that whatever ends up being built there - IF something ever happens to the site - is something really useful, attractive and is going to be something that our little town really needs.

If we're not careful, someone will just come along and dump a few hundred more houses there.

The site has just been bought by the firm Galliford Try, which describes itself as a "housebuilding and construction group".

Oh dear...

Of course there will be some houses, sure. But can't we be a bit more imaginative and use for other things too?

Personally, I'd love to see a cinema, some restaurants, community hall, public open spaces, cafes, a few shops.

What does anyone else think? And am I living in cuckoo land?!!

There are some nice things happening to Midsomer Norton right now - the new play area next to the leisure centre, new cycle paths, and so on. Let's not waste this big big chance!

Thanks BoxOffice1. Good to know that I'm not totally barking up the wrong tree (just been commenting on the dangerous dogs story)...

Now if only someone in authority, someone with power to decide what gets built in Midsomer Norton, would listen....

I am so with you there Coopslad!

I would love to see a small complex which could perhaps offer bowling or a small cinema with eating places situated near by. I had thought that the area on South Road and behind on Primrose Lane would have been an ideal area as it would encourage trade to the town centre and offer the younger population somethinig to do with their time. It would also be ideal for families as many of us go as far as Bristol for these kind of activities.

Ideally I'd like to see the old Alcan site used once more as an industrial enterprise, but I think those days are gone! You're right it is a great spot and it should be utalised to promote the area. It'd be a great spot for a hotel with the views on offer.
