New, state-of-the-art hi-tech street cleaning equipment worth £190,000 has hit the streets as the council steps up its war against litter and grime.

Following hot on the heels of the Bath and North East Somerset Council’s decision to increase the fine for littering to £75, the new machines will help make the local environment a cleaner, more pleasant place for residents and visitors. The two machines can sweep all major roads in a quarter of the time that a manual sweeper would and they use cutting edge computer technology making the unit easier to operate and maintain. They will operate everyday of the week and early evenings when required across the whole district.

Wayne Honey, the council’s south and west neighbourhood teams manager who covers Midsomer Norton, Radstock, Paulton, Peasedown St John and the villages, said: “Our staff are fully trained to use these machines and ready to fight the menace of litter and grime in all local communities.”

To help the fight against grime the council is also reminding residents and businesses to play their part by report littering, graffiti, and flytipping to Council Connect Website
